Good last morning of 2020!
Do you make New Year’s resolutions? I kind of get tired of saying for the ten thousandth time, “I’m going to eat better, lose ten pounds, get in better shape, read more, stress less.” Blah…..
A few years ago I came across the idea of picking a word or short phrase as a theme for the year. Every year it ends up having several meanings and a deeper significance than I had planned.
In 2018 I picked “Enough” which started as in “You are doing enough!” and ended up being “Enough! Stop! Change!” 2019 was “Keep Going” when everything felt a little over my head but I needed to keep digging out. 2020 was “Present”. I picked it because I felt that Everett was the best gift we could have gotten to start our new year, and I wanted to be present in his first year. It was a great word in light of all that happened this year, because not only did I really make the conscious effort to remember everything, but it was good to take the year in and use it as a growing opportunity – not to avoid it but to remain present.
This year I’m picking “Embrace” – 2020 was divisive, stressful, lonely and full of hard transitions. In 2021 we need to embrace more than ever – how things are, the small moments, our friends AND our “enemies”.
What word will you pick as your theme this year? I’d love to hear!
