Heat Wave!!
I am actually listening to that old song by Martha Reeves and The Vandellas as I write this article on Tuesday evening (could it be hotter?). What a great cruising song! Cruising is my favorite way to spend a heat wave here in the Black Hills. See, I am originally from Iowa, and in Iowa during a heat wave there is nowhere to go but inside an air conditioned building to beat the heat.
Here in the Lead we have options. My husband and I like to hop in our open top CJ7 and cruise down Ice Box Canyon right outside of town. It’s called Ice Box Canyon for a reason! We escape the heat and let our dogs run in the creek. The whole family gets to cool down. Or we grab a picnic dinner and head to Hanna to eat under the shade of Ponderosa Pines. Sometimes the road takes us all the way to New Castle to get a shake from Way Back Burger. That is the best part of living in Lead! There is always a place to escape and take a “mini vacation”
Now, some of you may be saying… “Christine, I’m too busy for a vacation… don’t you know I have things to do and not enough hands or time to do it!” Well, for those of you who feel that way let me introduce you to a concept of taking a short vacation in your mind. I used to teach this technique to my clients all the time when I did human services. It’s called visualization and it goes like this.
-
Start by closing your eyes and imagining in your mind a peaceful and relaxing place like the creek running through Ice Box Canyon.
-
Allow your imagination to feel and see everything, using all of your senses. Feel the warm sun, hear the water, smell the pine trees or watch the birds.
-
If stressful thoughts enter your mind, acknowledge them, then dismiss them.
Now start slowly with this, take a one minute vacation in your mind and then work towards stretching it out to two or three minutes. You will be amazed at how the stress melts away for a while and clarity of mind returns.
Whatever you do to beat the heat just remember this is Lead, and in a few months we will miss these hot days!
