New Year, New Solutions

Hey Lead!

As we head into the 2021/2022 school year I want to encourage us all to adopt the curious mindsets of new students. The attitude of a newcomer can be a helpful way to approach both old and new problems. My Niece just entered her first year in Middle School. While some problems like how to navigate a new building are brand new to her, some problems like how to complete school work in a timely manner, how to communicate with friends, and how to get up early for school are old.

She and I share a common dislike of mornings and this year she is responsible for getting herself up. We talked about the old tricks like, an alarm clock, going to bed earlier, and both wished we could just change this part of our personalities. However because she is looking at this as a brand new problem in her life rather than an insurmountable barrier that keeps beating her, she has new ideas. She googled extreme alarm clocks and opened a whole new world of wake up options!

Did you know you can get an alarm clock that is attached to wheels and it motors away from its base. This forces you to get up and chase it and by then you are already up! You can get an alarm that uses light therapy, vibrates your bed, even ones that require the solving of math problems. When we look at issues in a new way we find new solutions. So adopt the mindset of a new student and see what problems you can solve today!
