Good Morning!
This last weekend our little family took a trip to Ohio to see some good friends that used to live in Lead. We haven’t been on vacation since before the baby was born so it was nice to get out and go somewhere, even for a quick trip. I asked our friends what they most missed about living in Lead and they said it really was our sense of community – how you could go anywhere to anything and everyone would know you and greet you and be friends. “We’ve struggled to connect with our neighbors. We’ve brought them fruit from our trees, tried to chat, but even after three years it’s just like people here don’t really care or need more friends.”
Last week we enjoyed the Lead Deadwood Community Fund’s chili feed at the Deadwood Mountain Grand (great new venue for the event!). It was something we all missed last year and it was so fun to have it again! It was wonderful to see so many people that we hadn’t seen in so long after what feels like a long winter of hibernation. Even for me it was the most socializing I’ve done in a very long time and it felt great!
I like Ohio and it was supercalifragalistic* to enjoy spring – so many flowers, so many budding leaves! But despite our long winters and lack of flora and fauna, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else – we really do have a special sense of place and community in Lead and I came home with a renewed sense of how much I love it here.

Thursday, 4/29, 6pm – Virtual Event: Meet Sanford Lab’s artist in residence, Leekyung Kang. Meet celebrated artist and assistant professor at the Idaho State University and Artist-in-Resident. She will explore the physical and scientific landscapes of the underground facility. Join us to learn about Kang’s previous work, her background and what attracted her to this program. Saturday, 5/1, 10am-2pm Explore Fitness & Adventures will host their hands-on basic navigation and survival skills. A short survival and navigation lesson will be taught and then we will try to get lost. You will figure out where we are going and how to get back after learning everything we teach you. Learn hiking essentials, what to do in an emergency, basic navigation skills, topographic map, compass skills. $29/per person gear, lesson and refreshments provided. 5/18 – Thomas Grier Day – join us for birthday cake, trash clean up and an open house event at the Homestake Opera House! More details to follow!
5/22 – Our first Hard Rock Golddigger Fashion Show! Sponsored by the Lead Area Chamber of Commerce, our members and the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center. This event is a fundraiser for both our organizations. Tickets are $30 at the door and $25 in advance. You won’t want to miss it!
5/27 – SCIENCE ROCKS: Cadaver Working Dogs! Learn the science behind searching for missing persons dead and alive at the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center!
