Howdy!
I recently started listening to The Joy of Membership’s new podcast. Joy writes great emails so I gave her podcast a shot. The episode about Sacred Cows with Stephan Meyer is particularly interesting! Check out the whole show here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-joy-of-membership/id1526610198
In a nutshell Stephan Meyer is a German guy who studies radical change. After business consulting he started to see two kinds of organizational change – slow and plodding and sudden and radical change. He decided to study sudden, radical change and did interviews all over the world with business people in various positions. What he found was that people are change resistant (shocking) and hold very tightly to their presupposed suppositions and ideas (sacred cows). Sometimes we all need a crazy event to knock us loose. Think of your own life, and there have probably been several times when you were knocked out of your comfort zone – whether it was getting fired, moving, having your heart broken, 9/11 or some other outside major event (cough, cough).
Some of the people he interviewed didn’t see the importance of radical change but others agreed that it’s good to prepare and be flexible enough before a crisis happens (since it inevitably will). And sometimes there’s just no other way than sudden, crazy, shocking change.
I’m fascinated by the way 2020 is shaping up, and I’m especially interested in how this year will forever change the course of business in Lead and in South Dakota – it’s already happening, people are thrilled and appalled by us all over the country, we’re famous!
This week I had two interesting conversations – one with Lori Frederick, a Senior Business Development Representative in the Governor’s Office of Economic development. She has all kinds of great ideas and resources for businesses wanting to start or relocate to South Dakota. I also was approached by someone from a big city in Washington looking to bring their talent and skills to our small town after stumbling upon us on a great Western road trip.
I don’t know what the next few years will bring – and I won’t even try to guess after this year, but I know one thing – this is going to be a thrilling decade! Fortune favors the brave and there’s never been a better time to be daring!
