First settled in 1876, and incorporated in 1877, the City of Lead is a sparkling jewel nestled in the Northern Black Hills of South Dakota. Long the home of the great Homestake Mining Company, Lead boasts small town charm with large potential.

The City of Lead was once the home for thousands of Homestake employees and their families and the town that they built has remained unchanged in many ways. The Sanford Underground Research Facility has taken ownership of the old Homestake Mine and is developing experiments that will add tremendous knowledge to our understanding of our universe.

2020 may have been a strange and unprecedented year for many but it brought even more tourism and business continues to boom in Lead because of the research going on and contracts with different companies. We’re always looking for ways to support new business growth and especially new food services establishments! There’s room for your business here!

Like so many other states and areas, Lead’s housing market has exploded in 2020-2021 and prices are increasing with demand. We are excited about this growth and interest in our community and know it will bring great things in the coming decade!

The Lead-Deadwood Middle School and High School are located in the community of Lead. The school system boasts a strong foundation in the STEM criteria, a very lively performing arts curriculum and has a goal of educating the entire student.

Lead has a population of 3,100 (as of the 2015 census); many who are active in local events, volunteer for causes and are just rather friendly: come and meet us!
